The UH Neurological Institute Center for Music & Medicine is dedicated to enhancing the patient experience by treating and healing patients through music and the arts, while serving as a resource of medical treatment for musicians with injuries.

This is accomplished through:

  • Musical performances by patient, physician and professional ensembles.
  • Collaboration with music therapy to enhance healing and promote wellness.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of music-related injuries and promotion of overall musician health.

Enhancing Patient Experience

The center aims to provide a richer cultural environment for patients during their hospital stay, including the opportunity to attend occasional concerts in the Atrium and throughout the hospital. Student and professional musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Music School Settlement as well as other amateur physician-musicians on staff at University Hospitals Case Medical Center are recruited for performances.

With the increasing attention toward “wellness” and alternative medicine, incorporating music into the patient’s experience is both natural and cutting edge. The opening of the new Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2010 provides a unique opportunity to improve the overall patient experience through music.

Treatment through Music and the Arts

UH Case Medical Center already has a nationally recognized Music Therapy Program led by Deforia Lane, PhD, MT-BS. Further growth and collaboration through the Center has led to expansion of this program.

Musician Health

Musicians often develop unique injuries that can be devastating and career threatening. The correct diagnosis and management requires expertise available only at tertiary care centers like UH Case Medical Center. The Center is a resource for the health needs of musicians not only in Northeast Ohio but from around the world.
