Under the direction of Jonathan H. Lass, MD, and recognized as one of the most respected academic medical centers in the country, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, together with Case Western Reserve University, provides superior patient care, advanced clinical technology and pioneering research to advance visual health.
Our physicians and clinicians are ranked among the best in the country, specializing in diseases and conditions affecting the eye and maintaining visual health. Our Eye Institute is comprised of three Centers of Excellence: The Center for Anterior Segment Diseases and Surgery, The Center for Pediatric Eye Diseases and Surgery, and The Center for Macular and Retinal Diseases and Surgery.
Within these centers, we specialize in amblyopia; cataracts; cornea and ocular surface problems such as dry eye, Fuchs' dystrophy, herpes keratitis, and keratoconus; crossed eyes; diabetic retinopathy; glaucoma; and macular degeneration.
In addition, we provide routine eye examinations, medical and surgical care for simple and complex vision disorders, in-patient consultations, diagnostic testing, and simple and complex adult and pediatric contact lens fittings.
In addition, our highly-trained physicians hold full-time faculty appointments at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and oversee activities of the Visual Sciences Research Center and Visual Sciences Training Program. Our translational research collaborations involve over 30 investigators across eight disciplines and the department is ranked 10th in research funding by the nation by the National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute. Major areas of research include cataract, corneal inflammation and infections, diabetic retinopathy, genetic eye diseases, macular degeneration and other retinal degenerations such as retinitis pigmentosa
The Eye Institute is also home to two state-of-the-art image reading centers—the Specular Microscopy Reading Center (SMRC) and the Retinal Disease Image Analysis Reading Center (REDIARC) that provide imaging data for both federal and corporate clinical trials across the country.
Our physicians also work in partnership with the greater Cleveland community through volunteerism, committee memberships and serving as members and trustees of Boards. Our outreach includes the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland, The Cleveland Eye Bank, the Cleveland Sight Center, Ohio Lions, and Prevent Blindness Ohio, which provides over 1000 free eye exams per year to people who lack health insurance.
