Innovation & Technology

The NSU team observes patients’ minute-to-minute progress with advanced monitoring equipment, including:

  • Intracranial pressure monitoring – provides continuous information about pressures within the brain

  • Brain tissue oxygenation monitoring measures the amount of oxygen that is being delivered to brain tissue

  • Cerebral blood flow monitoring - measures the amount of blood flow going to the brain

  • Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography – has a variety of uses including, detecting blocked arteries in the brain, intraoperative monitoring, and measurement of dynamic cerebrovascular responses

  • Continuous video EEG monitoring a specialized form of EEG testing that allows physicians to learn more about seizures by viewing them directly

  • CT angiography a CT scan that uses intravenous contrast to show all the blood vessels inside the brain

  • CT perfusion – to measure blood flow in the brain with a CT scanner

  • MRI diffusion imaging – shows area of brain tissue that is damaged

  • MRI perfusion imaging – shows blood flow and can estimate weather damaged tissue is still salvageable with therapy

  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) a form of brain imaging that shows brain metabolism
