Can Cataract Surgery Benefit Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease? - Neurological Institute part of NIH-funded study to find if restored vision improves daily living, memory

University Hospitals Case Medical Center’s Eye and Neurological institutes are participating in a new study to determine if removing cataracts can improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A multi-institutional team of researchers will participate in this five-year, $2.9 million study and will be led by the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. The funding is from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)... .“Ultimately, if you can't perceive something, it is hard to remember it,” said Alan Lerner, M.D., director of the Memory and Cognition Center in UH Case Medical Center’s Neurological Institute and Associate Professor of Neurology at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

Senior projects offer real-life experiences

Chad Slomovitz found his dream job by shadowing Dr. Alan Cohen, a pediatric neurosurgeon at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. "There are so many fields in medicine," said Mr. Slomovitz, who will be a pre-med major at Emory University in Atlanta. "The senior project gave me more insight into the life of a surgeon. I loved it." He said a surgeon's practice, involving half the day with patients and the other half in the operating room, "provides a very nice balance."...
