To protect babies from infection:
A 30-second handwash is required before you touch your baby. Frequent handwashing is encouraged while you are on the unit.
Gowns must be worn whenever visitors (including parents) hold babies.
Siblings age 4 and older may visit the NICU if they are healthy (no cold or flu symptoms, and no recent exposure to contagious diseases such as chicken pox.) From approximately December through April -- when colds and flu are widespread -- siblings are not able to visit. Please check with your nurse if you have questions.
Parents and guardians may visit 24 hours a day. Grandparents are welcome from 8 am to 8 pm. Other visitors are welcome from 8 am to 8 pm when accompanied by a parent.
Other important information:
- Sleeping accommodations for parents are available, but limited; ask your nurse for details.
- Support for breastfeeding families are available through Lactation Services.
- Parent-to-Parent Coffee Hour is offered in the Activity Center on Horvitz 4. These sessions, facilitated by child life specialists, offer a supportive environment where parents can ask questions and meet other parents who face similar challenges. All are welcome.
