There are a variety of treatments available for epilepsy, each tailored individually to your child’s needs.
As we customize a treatment program just for your child, we focus on achieving the best results with the an appropriate treatment plan:
- We offer medical management of seizures with FDA approved antiepileptic drugs. Our well trained epilepsy nurses with guide you through dosage changes and regular follow-up visits with your physician will give your child easily accessible medical expertize to optimize the treatment and minimize drug side effects.
- Drug Research Trials may offer some of our patients to receive cutting-edge medication that is in the pipeline but has not been approved by the FDA.
- We offer a variety of surgery types to treat medically intractable seizures in children of all ages by nationally and internationally recognized pediatric neurosurgeons.
The procedures include hemispherectomies, lesionectomies, lobectomies and taylored resections after invasive video EEG evaluations have pin pointed the area of seizure onset. These operations may cure or significantly control seisures with minimal risks in the hands of our experienced team. We offer a specific blood conservation program: one of the standard risks of intracranial surgery is blood loss and the ensuing potential for transfusion. With University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospitals Blood Conservation Program (originally designed for Jehovah’s Witnesses), we pre-treat patients to optimize their blood count prior to surgery, minimizing the need for transfusion.
- We offer the implantation of the Vagal Nerve Stimulator, a device that reduces the frequency and severity of seizures by approximately 50% in half of the patients implanted.
The ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carbohydrate diet that may result in significant seizure reduction particularly infant and young children with a very high seizure frequency.
