Innovation & Technology

The care of people with brain tumors requires the use of highly specialized brain monitoring and neuroimaging equipment to guide therapies that rid the brain of diseased tissue without damaging healthy tissues.

Dr. Robert Maciunas is one of the world’s foremost experts on brain imaging, having spent his career studying and teaching computer navigation. Image-guided systems are used to treat complicated tumors or those that are hard to access. Dr. Maciunas has authored numerous books and other publications about image-guided neurosurgery, including the very first in the field, Interactive Image Guide: Neurosurgery.

Among the state-of-the-art technology available at the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center are:
  • One of the world’s first intraoperative MR operating suites, and the first in Ohio. Intraoperative MR scans are used to track surgical progress in real time.
  • The intraoperative MR operative suite is integrated with other state-of-the-art techniques such as awake brain mapping of motor and language functions, as well as other higher cortical functions for the safest possible surgery. It also integrates with image guidance using computer navigation tools and techniques.
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery: Gamma Knife radiosurgery delivers critical radiation to precisely targeted area in a single fraction, sparing the surrounding tissues. The noninvasive procedure delivers 201 narrow beams of cobalt gamma radiation that are precisely focused on a single target. The tissue being treated receives the highest dose of radiation, while surrounding tissue is left minimally affected.
