Q: Will a radiology procedure be scary for my child?
A: Our radiologists work only with children and are specially attuned to the needs of each child. While unique medical conditions may require a variety of different types of tests, all of our staff members are trained to provide a comforting environment that will calm his fears. If he’s especially nervous, we may recommend mild sedation.
Q: What can we do to prepare our child before the procedure?
A: If your child is old enough to understand, tell her what will be involved. You could say, “You might be a little uncomfortable during some of this, but they’re going to make it go as fast as possible.” Our team will also help by explaining at the outset exactly what’s going to be done and how long it will last.
Q: Who will be involved in working with my child?
A: For many tests, a nurse will start an IV drip and help with preliminary setup. Then the test will be managed either by a technologist alone or in tandem with a physician. Sometimes a trainee will sit in to observe and learn how to help children in the future. Child Life Specialists may also be on hand to help your child relax and feel more comfortable.
Q: Will my child have to remain still for long periods of time?
A: It’s different for different types of tests. We recognize that most children don’t like to be still for very long, so we may suggest a mild sedative to help them relax and remain still until the test is finished. We use plenty of techniques to make your child more comfortable; in fact, the entire testing environment is set up specifically to accomplish this.
Q: How will we be able to afford all this?
A: At Rainbow, no child who needs help is turned away. Medicare pays the major share of the costs incurred by patients. Your insurance carrier may cover some or all of the remainder. If you have questions about finances, call the finance office.
