Common Questions and Answers

Q: How common is asthma in children?
A: Asthma is the most common chronic disorder in children, found in 10 to 30 percent of kids. Some 25 percent of children admitted to a hospital are being treated for asthma.

Q: Is it easy to control asthma?
A: In mild cases, usually. But in 30 to 40 percent of patients, care is more complex. Rainbow medical professionals are experts at administering ongoing care—and treating your child as a whole person.

Q: Can asthma be life-threatening?
A: It shouldn’t be, but about 5,000 people – including about 500 children – die from it each year. Many in the medical profession believe that with earlier intervention, more accurate diagnosis, and better treatment, death could be completely prevented. Rainbow specialists are expert at helping families and children manage this disease.

Q: What should we expect when our pediatrician can not handle the problem with my child’s lungs?
A: Once your pediatrician refers you to us, we will do a thorough general exam and medical history. We may then order skin tests, function tests down through toddler age, and certain x-rays that are not available through most pediatricians. When medication is prescribed, we always spend the time to make sure you and your child know how to use it most effectively.

Q: Will my child experience pain during testing and treatment?
A: Every child and every situation are unique and may require unique interventions. In general, our team of nurses and residents—who are always concerned with what your child is feeling—will take care to minimize any discomfort.

Q: How will we be able to afford all this?
A: At Rainbow, no child who needs help is turned away. Medicare pays the major share of the costs incurred by patients. Your insurance carrier may cover some or all of the remainder. If you have questions about finances, call the finance office.
