Because you can’t see inside your child’s eye, it’s important to get an evaluation by a professional in order to identify many types of eye diseases and problems.
Things you can look for that may indicate a need to see your pediatrician include the following:
- You may notice an abnormal reflex when you take a photograph
- When you look at your child or a photograph of him—do his eyes look a little off?
- If your child says he can’t see out of one eye or is having trouble reading,
you should ask your pediatrician to check for problems.
Be aware that many children, especially younger ones, will never complain. After all, they don’t know what “normal” vision is. That’s why early infant and pre-school eye examinations are very important.
Some eye problems cannot be detected even by a pediatrician, who doesn’t have the necessary training or the specialized equipment. If your child should fail a routine eye screening at school or at your pediatrician’s, call us for an evaluation.
