If your child shows any of the following symptoms, talk with your pediatrician—she knows your child well and is the best person to help you determine if a neurological disorder may be the cause. Some of the signs you should look for:
-
delays in reaching developmental milestones
- unusual increase or lack of growth in head size
- unusual lack of coordination
- sudden or shifting changes in consciousness or mood
- muscle rigidity, tremors, or seizures
- older children may report persistent or severe headaches, loss of feeling, or tingling
- muscle weakness or paralysis
- blackouts (loss of consciousness)
- disorientation
- memory loss
- convulsions or muscle spasms
Remember that symptoms of a nervous system disorder may be very similar to other conditions or medical problems. A baby may, for example, appear to be having a seizure when she may have a much simpler digestive problem. If you have any concerns at all, consult with your pediatrician right away
