Residents are paid according to their level of training.

Education Allowance
Money available for books, journal subscriptions, conference travel, and some medical equipment (e.g. stethoscopes).

Junior and senior residents have the opportunity to earn an additional $200-$300 by meeting a minimum level of conference attendance.
Pediatric Boards
Categorical and Medicine-Pediatric Residents will be reimbursed for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) exam if they take the exam in the fall immediately following residency. All residents are reimbursed for half of the cost of the boards upon registering, with the opportunity for full reimbursement if the conference attendance requirement is met.
Vacation
Every resident receives four weeks of vacation per year split into two week blocks plus five days off over the winter holidays. Interns receive a fifth week of vacation at the end of the intern year.
Meal Card
Residents receive on-call money that they use by swiping their identification badges at the cafeteria and the Einstein’s bagel & coffee cart in the hospital atrium. The amount of money is directly correlated to the number of overnight calls each resident has, and can be used even when not on call. In addition, free lunch is provided at almost every noon conference.
Resident Lounge
The residents and fellows have a newly refurbished lounge that has a flat screen TV, Nintendo wii, refrigerator (stocked with soda, yogurt, frozen meals, etc), microwave, coffee maker, and water cooler. This is also where the resident mailboxes are located.
Case Affiliation
All residents are provided affiliation with Case Western Reserve University. This includes access to gym facilities, libraries, and email. This can also get you discounted admission to places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For more details please see the Case Affiliation FAQ .
Fitness Centers
As part of the Case affiliation, all residents have free access to Case’s Veale Center gymnasium and athletic facilities. The available facilities include a cardio training room, weight lifting room, swimming pool, racquet ball courts, squash courts, climbing wall, basketball courts, indoor track, and tennis courts. The Veale Center is located across the street from UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. Case also has a private fitness center, 1-2-1 Fitness Center, also located across the street from UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. In addition to a weight and cardio training room, 1-2-1 offers a variety of group exercise classes at no extra cost, including cycling, pilates, yoga, and cardio kickboxing. Discounted memberships are available to residents.
Health Insurance
The medical plans in the UH Benefits Program are offered through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. There are two plans to choose from, thus allowing each resident to choose the plan that best fits them. Health insurance is available to employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 16 hours per week. Coverage is effective the first day of the month coinciding with or following your employment date.
Dental Insurance
Dental coverage is available through CIGNA Dental for you and your family. Covered services can be obtained in or out of the network. The plan provides coverage for preventive, basic, and major restorative services. Your monthly contribution is payroll deducted on a pre-tax basis. Coverage is effective the first day of the month coinciding with or following your employment date.
Professional Liability Insurance
Professional personnel are covered by the hospital at no cost.
Retirement Funds
403(b) Matched Retirement Savings Plan: All employees are eligible to contribute to the 403(b) Matched Retirement Savings Plan. Employees with one year of service who have worked at least 1,000 hours are eligible to receive a match. UHHS will match 50 percent of the first 6 percent of your contributions. Money the hospital contributes (matched contributions) is 100 percent vested after three years of service.
