REI Faculty

William W. Hurd, MD, Professor of Reproductive Biology and Division Director
Dr. Hurd became the Director of the REI Division August 2007 and will be the Fellowship Program Director. He has been actively involved in academic medicine for almost 2 decades and has extensive experience in research design, data analysis, scientific writing, and scientific presentations. His basic research efforts have focused on myometrial physiology, and his laboratory has received significant funding over the years from NIH (NIDA and NICHD), and the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation. His clinical research areas of interest include infertility, assisted reproductive techniques, and minimally invasive surgery. Other clinical areas of interest include recurrent pregnancy loss, polycystic ovarian syndrome and chronic pelvic pain.  Earlier this year, he co-edited a textbook with Dr. Tommaso Falcone entitled, “Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, written primarily for residents and fellows.  He will serve as overall clinical and research director for each fellow, and meet with them individually each month to supervise their progress. As such, he will ensure that each fellow completes an application for registration in that fellowship, and that each fellow actively pursues a research program which will result in the completion of a thesis which may be utilized in the certification process.  He will also serve as the primary clinical mentor and as a research mentor. 

James H. Liu, MD, Professor of Reproductive Biology and Department Chair
Dr. Liu has been the Department Chart since 2001.  Previously, he was the REI Division Director and Fellowship Program Director at the University of Cincinnati for over a decade.  He is an internationally known expert in hormonal changes associated with aging and therapeutic hormone effects during menopause. He has extensive translation and clinical research experience, and has been the PI on multiple NIH and industrial grants, including the Women’s Health Initiative and the Clinical Contraceptive Trials Network. His clinical areas of interest include menopausal medicine, osteoporosis, infertility, and assisted reproductive techniques. He will serve as a clinical and research mentor.

Stacie J. Weil, MD, Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology
Dr. Weil is a clinical reproductive Endocrinologist in the REI Division. She has been in the Department since 2005.  Prior to coming here, she spent several years as a staff REI at the National Institutes of Health, National Naval Medical Center, and Walter Reed Hospital.  Her primary clinical interests include polycystic ovarian syndrome, menopause, assisted reproductive technologies, in vitro fertilization, and reconstructive fertility surgery. She will serve as a clinical mentor.

Off-Service Rotation Specialists

Urologist with Special Interest in Male Infertility
Allen Seftel, MD, Professor of Urology and Reproductive Biology
Dr. Seftel is a member of the Department of Urology with a primary clinical focus in male infertility who has collaborated with the REI Division since 1998. His clinical research interests include aging and androgens, erectile dysfunction, and anatomic determinants of sperm dysfunction, including varicoceles. He currently serves on the Department of Urology Research Committee and has mentored a number of Surgery residents during their research year. He will serve as the primary clinical mentor for andrology evaluation and treatment and may serve as a mentor for fellows with a primary research interest in andrology.

Pediatric Endocrinologist
Leona Cuttler, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Bioethics, Chief, Division Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, and Director, Center for Child Health and Policy
Dr. Cuttler is a pediatric endocrinologist with a wide range of interests and expertise, including disorders of growth and puberty, treatment of short stature, pubertal abnormalities, and health services policy. She is currently the PI on two NIH R01 grants and a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow.  She will function as a liaison with the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and will serve as both a clinical mentor and research mentor.

Medical Endocrinologist
Baha M. Arafah, MD, Professor and Director, Division of Medical Endocrinology
Dr. Arafah is the Director of the Division of Medical Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine. He has special clinical interests in disorders of the thyroid gland and Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Function during Critical Illness. He is the Director of the fellowship program in Medical Endocrinology. He will function as a liaison with the Division of Endocrinology, will mentor fellows in medical endocrinology and serve as a clinical mentor.

Jane Corteville, MD, Associate Professor of Reproductive Biology
Noam Lazebnik, MD, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Genetics and Radiology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has two full-time faculty members board certified in Medical Genetics.  Both faculty members also have special interest and expertise in obstetric ultrasound.

Research Faculty

Neal Rote, PhD, Professor of Reproductive Biology and Pathology, and Director, OB/GYN Division of Research
Dr. Rote has been the Research Division Director for the OB/GYN Department since 2001.  His basic research interests focus on recurrent pregnancy loss, and he is currently working with Dr. Hurd to develop a clinical center for the evaluation and treatment of these patients. His laboratory has been continuously funded by NIH for more than 20 years, and he is the former Chair of Microbiology and Immunology at Wright State University. He brings a wealth of experience in the training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and has served as a primary research mentor for a number of Gynecologic Oncology fellows.

George Gorodeski, MD, PhD, Professor of Reproductive Biology
Dr. Gorodeski is a member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology with an exceptional record of translational and basic research productivity, and has a 20-year history of NIH funding. His research interests focus on hormonal effects on cellular structure and function.  He also serves as the Chair of the Department Research Proposal Review Committee, and will assist the fellows in the organization and preparation of research proposals.  He will serve as a basic research mentor and will also provide guidance in research proposal and grant writing. 

Sam Mesiano, PhD, Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology and Biochemistry
Dr. Mesiano has been a faculty member in the Research Division Director for the OB/GYN Department since 2004.  His basic research interests focus on the hormonal control of human parturition and the molecular mechanism for progesterone and estrogen actions and interactions target cells.  His laboratory is currently funded by a March of Dimes grant and an NIH R-21 grant.  He will serve as a basic research mentor and provide input in research development and data analysis.

Sheryl Kingsberg, PhD, Associate Professor of Reproductive Biology and Psychiatry, and Chief, Division of Behavioral Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Kingsberg is clinical psychologist who delivers direct inpatient and outpatient care, and serves as a consultation for behavioral medicine and women's health issues to medical/surgical services throughout UHC.  Her clinical interests include the psychological aspects of new reproductive technologies, pregnancy, incontinence, gynecologic oncology, and menopause.  She also has special expertise in sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain. She will serve as both a clinical and research mentor and will also provide guidance in research development.

Jeffrey W. Janata, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, Clinical Psychologist
Dr. Janata is clinical psychologist who delivers direct inpatient and outpatient care, and serves as a consultation for behavioral medicine and women's health issues to medical/surgical services throughout UHC.  His clinical interests include the psychological aspects of fertility treatment and assisted reproductive technologies.  He will serve as both a clinical and research mentor.

Marjorie Greenfield, MD, Associate Professor of Reproductive Biology and Pediatrics
Dr. Greenfield is an obstetrician/gynecologist in the Department with special interest and expertise in pediatric and adolescent gynecology. She has become a primary referral provider for complex reproductive congenital anomalies. She will serve as a clinical mentor for sexual development and the problems of puberty.
