A two-year dually accredited ACGME / AOA program in Primary Care Sports Medicine is offered as a combined venture of University Hospitals Case Medical Center and University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center, A Campus of UH Regional Hospitals. As a dually accredited program, both MD and DO applicants are welcome. The fellowship is open to all graduates of either ACGME or AOA approved residencies in: Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine.
Osteopathic applicants who have completed an AOA approved residency and have completed board certification in their primary field will be eligible to sit for the AOA Sports Medicine CAQ upon completion of this fellowship. Allopathic applicants who have completed an ACGME approved residency and have completed board certification in their primary field will be eligible to sit for the Sports Medicine CAQ offered by their respective board upon completion of this fellowship.
As an AOA accredited program, there is extensive exposure to Neuromuscular Medicine. Both MD and DO fellows participate in Neuromuscular Medicine elective clinical time during their second year. They also participate in a longitudinal hands-on skills workshop that is part of the regular weekly didactic Primary Care Sports Medicine curriculum.
The goal of this program is to educate physicians in all aspects of caring for athletes. This includes medical care both on and off the field. Exposure to athletes of all ages is provided, however there is a focus on the pediatric / adolescent age range. Clinical time is spent with Primary Care Sports Medicine physicians and sub-specialists in the following fields: Pediatric Orthopaedics, Sports Orthopaedics, Spine Orthopaedics, Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics, Hand Orthopaedics, Neuromuscular Medicine, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Rheumatology, Cardiology, and Rehabilitation.
On the field sports coverage is obtained by working with high school and collegiate level teams at the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III levels. Mass-participation event coverage of youth soccer tournaments and gymnastics competitions is routinely provided. Other opportunities to cover marathons, short track speed skating, and figure skating are frequently available.
As an academic institution, a focus on research and academic medicine is paramount. Clinical research seminars are provided, as well as quarterly Sports Medicine journal clubs. In conjunction with faculty members, all fellows initiate and complete a research project of their choice. Involvement in national level sports medicine organizations (AMSSM, AOASM, ACSM) is encouraged and financially supported.
