Curriculum

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship curriculum is fully compliant with the American Board of Pediatrics requirements for board eligibility and with the ACGME requirements for competency-based curriculum content and evaluation.

The curriculum is designed to ensure that the graduating PEM fellow demonstrates competency in the 6 Core Competency areas as they relate to the field of PEM.
These include competency in:

Patient Care.
The fellow will learn to provide family centered patient care in the Emergency setting that is developmentally and age appropriate, compassionate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.

Medical Knowledge.
The fellow will understand the scope of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioral knowledge in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine; demonstrate the ability to acquire, critically interpret and apply this knowledge in patient care.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
The fellow will demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in successful information exchange and partnering with patients, their families in the stressful PED environment and with professional associates in the Emergency setting.

Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
The fellow will demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for continuous self-assessment, using scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluate, and improve one's patient care practice in the PED setting.

Professionalism.
The fellow will demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles in medical practice in general and in the PED specifically, and sensitivity to diversity.

Systems-Based Practice.
The fellow will understand how to practice high quality Pediatric Emergency medicine and advocate for patients within the context of the health care system.
