The clinical training component of the PEM fellowship is based in the Pediatric Emergency Department at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital/ University Hospitals, of Cleveland-Case Medical Center, and serves both the children of Cleveland’s neighborhoods as well as acutely ill and injured children throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond. Our dedicated team of board-certified PEM physicians, PEM fellows, pediatric residents from the highly regarded pediatric residency at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, specialized pediatric emergency nurses, respiratory therapists and Child Life specialists are committed to providing our patients with the best pediatric emergency care. The PED is an integral part of the clinical services offered at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, with an annual patient volume of 30,000 visits, accounting for nearly 50% of hospital admissions. The emergency care provided in the PED is supported by our 220 bed state-of-the-art children’s hospital that includes a 20-bed PICU staffed by pediatric critical care specialists, as well as medical and surgical specialists representing every pediatric subspecialty. UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital is an American College of Surgeons accredited Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center.

Our fellowship is designed to meet the requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics, yet create flexibility to foster unique electives and scholarly projects that enhance each individual’s fellowship experience. Fellows partner with faculty within the division to create a PEM fellowship experience that assist each individual as they launch their careers within this dynamic subspecialty. Fellows spend clinical time in the Pediatric Emergency Department at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital developing and refining the diagnostic, therapeutic and procedural skills necessary to provide exceptional care to acutely ill and injured children in the PED setting. Clinical time is limited during electives. There is no clinical time in the PED during PICU and Adult ED/Trauma Months, so that the fellow is fully integrated into the clinical schedules of these disciplines.

Other Oppurtunites depending upon special interest of individuals may include areas in international medicine, advocacy and EMS-C.

MetroHealth Medical Center: The Adult ED and Trauma rotations are performed at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. MetroHealth has a nationally known, high volume General Emergency Department and a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center. It has a well-regarded EM residency program and a reputation for excellence and commitment to education.

The EMS is integrated into research elective months and includes ride alongs with Cleveland Emergency Medical Service, a busy urban EMS agency in the city of Cleveland and suburban EMS squads. Run reviews with City of Cleveland and suburban units and continuing education for prehospital providers. Additional opportunities with EMS-C and State of Ohio EMS are also available.
