Ashley and Nicole entered the dance of life a little early. Fortunately, they were born into the hands of the masters of neonatology. Drs. Fanaroff and Walsh and their world-leading medical team choreograph technology and treatments with exquisite precision. Nurturing the tiny dancers in their care so they will bring down the house.

In the quickly-evolving world of technology, rainbow, one of the world’s premier children’s hospitals, is at the forefront of research and clinical programs that will set the pace for the future of pediatric medicine.

Plans are currently underway to construct a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), that will unite advanced technology, research and operative services in a home-like environment for families. The 20 million, 25,000 squarefoot unit will enhance our staff’s ability to diagnose, treat and, if necessary, operate on newborns within a few steps of their private rooms. For three decades, Rainbow’s NICU has ranked as the national leader in treating newborns and has among the highest survival rates for severely premature infants. The unique intensive care design will move the entire field of neonatal care forward.

Rainbow is designing a Maternal Fetal Medicine Center in collaboration with University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital. The Center will combine the expertise of perinatal specialists, neonatologists, and gynecologists with experts in genetics, gestational diabetes and advanced maternal age. The Center will focus on new screening technologies and pregnancy management.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) joins with Rainbow to create a one-of-a-kind Center for the Survivors of Childhood Cancer. LAF recently announced its partnership with Rainbow to create a survivorship center dedicated to those living with, through, and beyond cancer. A $100,000 LAF planning grant will help Rainbow establish a center to provide early identification and intervention, advocacy, counsel and education to cancer survivors from infancy to early adulthood. In addition, the Center will provide support to patients’ families, educators and peer groups. Our program will follow cancer survivors over time to investigate their issues and needs, identifying successful interventions. The Center will also create a p rogram for newly diagnosed patients to begin treatment with the support of professionals, educators, coaches and other survivors. LAF will commit an additional $150,000 each year for three years to the program.
The Center for Human Genetics, a unique collaboration between clinicians and researchers from Rainbow, University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case, provides up-todate diagnosis, risk management and patient management for the full spectrum of genetic disorders. Supported by state-of-the-art technology in the Center’s laboratories, our team of specialists focuses on clinical cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics and prenatal screening. Through their efforts, we are poised to discover new ways to test for the presence of disease, and, quite possibly, new ways to prevent or even cure disease right at its source.

The Rainbow Center for Pediatric Ethics, opened in 2001, is the first of its kind nationally. The Center, in collaboration with the Case Center for Bioethics, is a catalyst for medical personnel and families to negotiate and reconcile the challenging decisions on use of technologies, end-of-life concerns, organ donations and medical and social concerns in the best interest of the child. As medical technology and science advance at a rapid pace, the ethical dimensions of pediatric health care become a growing consideration.

Research in Rainbow’s Richard and Marcy Horvitz Pediatric Research Center and The Research Institute at University Hospitals of Cleveland focuses on a “translational” approach. In translational research, basic scientists in the laboratory collaborate with clinicians at the bedside to find new therapies, pharmaceuticals and medical devices that will change the way diseases are treated. Current research areas include polycystic kidney disease and renal development, pediatric gastrointestinal disease, embryonic and early childhood development and pulmonary inflammation.
