There are many different types of breast pumps, and because each family has its own set of circumstances, there is not one pump that is right for all mothers. We suggest that you review the following criteria to help you find the pump that will best meet your needs.

Selecting a breast pump:
• Efficiency: A pump with a quick suck/release cycle will elicit a better “letdown” and you will get more milk in a shorter amount of time. Pumping both breasts at once will also shorten pumping time.

• Comfort: You want a suction level that helps you obtain a letdown without causing pain. Because different women tolerate differing strengths of suction you should be able to adjust the suction on the pump. A pump that has a long suck/release cycle will be less comfortable than one that quickly sucks and releases the nipple.

• Affordability: Pump prices range from $29 for a manual pump to $300 for a double electric pump. The health benefits gained for your baby by giving pumped breast milk while you are away are priceless!

• Ease of assembly and cleaning: If you are pumping frequently or for a long period of time, you will want to be sure the pump is easy to care for.

Our lactation consultants are available in the hospital or at the lactation centers to answer your questions and help you decide which pump will best meet your needs. The pumps listed below have been found by breast-feeding mothers to be the most effective. These pumps can be purchased or rented at a number of University Hospitals
Health System locations.
