If your child shows any of the following symptoms, talk with your pediatrician—she knows your child well and is the best person to help you determine if a neurological disorder may be the cause.

Remember that symptoms of a nervous system disorder may be very similar to other conditions or medical problems. A baby may, for example, appear to be having a seizure when she may have a much simpler digestive problem. If you have any concerns at all, consult with your pediatrician right awaySome of the signs you should look for:

  • delays in reaching developmental milestones
  • unusual increase or lack of growth in head size
  • unusual lack of coordination
  • sudden or shifting changes in consciousness or mood
  • muscle rigidity, tremors, or seizures
  • older children may report persistent or severe headaches, loss of feeling, or tingling
  • muscle weakness or paralysis
  • blackouts (loss of consciousness)
  • disorientation
  • memory loss
  • convulsions or muscle spasms
