Last week, a number of tests were performed to evaluate the twins' brains and associated blood flow. Our Neuroradiology team was able to insert a wire coil into the venous circulation draining the twins' brains. These wire coils are used in general to block blood vessels in a variety of clinical situations. In this case, the wire coil did effectively alter the blood flow pattern, as an important step towards creating an independent circulation for each child. This is a critical first step toward separation of the twins.

Levitan, Nathan, MD In his statement to the media, Nathan Levitan, MD , UH Chief Medical Officer, said, "University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and the family continue to be optimistic about our ability to help Anastasia and Tatiana. The considerable risks associated with these procedures are well recognized, as are the risks that the twins' face if they are not separated. Based on recent events, we are enthusiastic and hopeful, and we are also trying to keep our hopes aligned with realistic expectations."
