Dental Care
When a child has special healthcare needs that take a lot of time and energy to care for, it’s easy to forget that they also have dental needs just like any child. Oral heath is important for all children because damage to baby teeth can also cause damage to permanent teeth that children will need their entire lives. Children with impaired immune systems or certain cardiac conditions are at a greater risk of infection caused by poor oral health. Special diets and self-stimulatory behaviors such as teeth grinding can also cause accelerated tooth wear and decay and increase the need for oral health services.

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
The AAPD website has a “find a dentist” tool to help you locate a pediatric dentist in your area. Pediatric dentists have an extra 2 or 3 years of training after dental school. This specialized program of study and hands-on experience prepares pediatric dentists to meet the unique needs of your infants, children and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs.
