Message from the President and CEO of Case Medical Center
At the end of 2006, University Hospitals announced that we had achieved a record-setting year in philanthropy. A year of unparalleled support from our many generous supporters ended with over $100 million in philanthropic support for our health system.
While these gifts came from many sources, including our board members and historic supporters such as the Rainbow Foundation, a significant number were received from the patients you served with great dedication and skill in 2006 and over the past several years.
These gifts are too numerous to list, but I would like to highlight the most noteworthy contributions UH received this past year from our grateful patients:
- A $5 million gift from the families of Leonard and Joan Horvitz, and Richard, Danielle and Matthew Horvitz to create The Marcy R. Horvitz Pediatric Emergency Center, in honor of Richard’s late wife, as part of the new Center for Emergency Medicine at UH Case Medical Center
- A $1 million gift to establish the S. Darwin Noll Clinical Discovery Fund in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, in Honor of Hugo D. Montenegro, MD, to support and stimulate clinical research and education in pulmonary medicine and honor the care Mr. Noll received from pulmonary and critical care specialist, Dr. Hugh Montenegro
- A $1 million gift from Karen and Larry Vassil to complete the funding for the Jack H. and William N. Skirball Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center
- A $1 million gift from Joyce and Duane Collins to support University Hospitals’ new cancer hospital; and finally,
- A seven-figure gift from John C. Haugh to establish a new Heart Valve Center at University Hospitals in honor of UH surgeon, Alan H. Markowitz, MD.
These gifts are, and will remain in perpetuity, a tribute to your clinical expertise and your commitment to fulfilling our mission - To Heal. To Teach. To Discover. Each day, you treat the patients who turn to us in their greatest hour of need with exceptional compassion and an unequaled approach to clinical care that meets their physical and emotional needs. On behalf of the 50,000 patients we serve annually and the entire University Hospitals community, I thank you for improving the quality of their lives and inspiring them to generously support our health system.
