Tackling Obesity and Diabetes in Kids (continued from page 21 of our report)
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is tackling the problems of childhood obesity and diabetes on many fronts, with hospital-sponsored programs and by collaborating with community organizations.
Leona Cuttler, MD, Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and Director of the Center for Child Health and Policy at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital; Professor, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine; and William T. Dahms Professor of Pediatrics, spearheads these efforts, which include:
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital efforts:
- The Center for Child Health & Policy led two childhood obesity management studies in primary care practices and safety net providers, then provided analyses and policy recommendations on childhood obesity for the state of Ohio.
- The Center for Childhood Diabetes, Activity & Nutrition is preventing childhood diabetes and obesity and their complications through patient care, research, community outreach and policy analysis. It has been named a Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Center of Excellence.
- Healthy Kids, Healthy Weight™ is a free multidisciplinary weight management program.
- Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) is a 15-center, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded landmark trial to determine optimal treatments for overweight youth with Type 2 diabetes.
Collaborations:
- Jump To It: A Happy, Healthy Me is a collaboration on an early childhood obesity prevention pilot with Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), Children’s Museum of Cleveland, The Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
- Childhood Obesity Prevention and Treatment Research Initiative – Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Prevention Research Center was named one of four sites nationwide to participate in this $12.5 million NIH-grant-funded program that focuses on blood pressure and obesity in Cleveland youth. Case Western Reserve University, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, CMSD and Cleveland YMCA are collaborating.
