Healthy You At The Zoo

What do the rhinoceros, fruit bat and gorilla have in common? They are all herbivores at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo with a diet and exercise program specially designed to keep them healthy. Zoo animals are not the only ones who need to maintain good health and nutrition – kids do, too.

Join University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield for a day of fun and learning at Healthy YOU at the Zoo on Saturday, September 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is being offered in celebration of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month for kids 4 - 16 years old and will feature pediatric experts from UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and representatives from the Children’s Museum of Cleveland. In addition, Radio Disney AM 1260 will be on site hosting Rockin’ Roundup with music, fun, games and surprises!

The first 2,500 kids will receive a pedometer, cinch bag and passport that will lead them through six stations where they will be invited to complete a health-related challenge. Kids who complete all the challenges will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a free prize.

Throughout the day kids will also learn how Cleveland Metroparks Zoo keeps the animals healthy through carefully planned diet and exercise programs. They will be able to watch a keeper-lead sea lion training demonstration and learn more about the Zoo’s diabetic Golden-bellied Mangabey. The Mangabey (an Old World monkey) is trained to allow keepers to check blood glucose levels and administer insulin injections.

The day will be highlighted by remarks from U.S. Representative Marcia Fudge of the 11th Congressional District of Ohio, as well as representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator George Voinovich and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, respectively.

This event is supported by UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Healthy Kids, Healthy Weight™ program, the Center for Childhood Diabetes, Activity and Nutrition at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Program, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and The Children’s Museum of Cleveland.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $10 per person, $7 for kids ages 2 to 11 and free for children under 2 and Zoo members. Parking is free. Located at 3900 Wildlife Way, the Zoo is easily accessible from Interstates 71, 77, 90 and 480.
