CLEVELAND (September 13, 2006) – Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital at University Hospitals (UH) today announced a $5 million gift from the families of Leonard and Joan Horvitz and Richard, Danielle and Matthew Horvitz. The family’s generosity will be recognized through the naming of The Marcy R. Horvitz Pediatric Emergency Center, in honor of Richard’s late wife. The Horvitz Pediatric Emergency Center is a critical component of UH’s Vision 2010 plan to build a new Center for Emergency Medicine facility at the Case Medical Center campus to serve both adults and children.
“Marcy loved children and cared deeply about their well-being. She also was an incredibly gifted teacher,” said Richard Horvitz. “Our family can think of no better way to pay tribute to her life than to help our community’s children in their time of need.”
The Horvitz family has a long history of supporting Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, contributing over $10 million, including the 1997 construction of the Leonard and Joan Horvitz patient tower, and the Richard and Marcy Horvitz Pediatric Research Center (translational research laboratories on the eighth floor of Rainbow). Richard Horvitz has been a University Hospitals director since 1996.
“We are deeply touched by this generous gift, and we are particularly grateful to the Horvitz family for their many years of loyalty and continued support,” said Thomas F. Zenty III, president and CEO, University Hospitals. “This gift will not only help strategically propel the development and implementation of a world-class Center for Emergency Medicine -- a critical component of Vision 2010 master facilities plan -- it will have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of Cleveland families and children.”
“This wonderful gift from three generations of a generous family celebrates Marcy Horvitz and her incredible sense of responsibility to the children of the community,” said Fred C. Rothstein, M.D., president and CEO, University Hospitals Case Medical Center. “It could not be more fitting than to have an emergency center, a place where the community turns for help, named in her honor.”
“University Hospitals’ and Rainbow’s emergency departments were built in the late 1970s and we now serve almost twice as many patients as then,” said Edward A. Michelson, M.D., Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine. “We are poised to significantly enhance our emergency care through this new facility.”
Avroy A. Fanaroff, M.D., Rainbow’s Chairman of Pediatrics, said “Clevelanders have long counted on Rainbow’s Pediatric Emergency Department to serve their needs for anything from an ear ache to severe trauma. This extraordinary gift from the Horvitz family will allow Rainbow to continue to meet the needs of children and their families in a facility that can address the unique needs of children.”
“The new pediatric emergency center will be a state-of-the-art facility, providing a new ‘front door’ for Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital,” said Dr. Rothstein. “The new facility will allow us to better meet the increasing needs of our community and provide the absolute best emergency care to our children.”
