University Hospitals of Cleveland Establishes Neurological Institute

CLEVELAND -- University Hospitals of Cleveland is ushering in a new era of clinical neurosciences with the establishment of the Neurological Institute of University Hospitals -- Cleveland’s first comprehensive center that brings together experts in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system.

Warren Selman, MD, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at University Hospitals of Cleveland (UHC) is the Director of the Neurological Institute, and Dennis Landis, MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurology at UHC serves as co-Director. Both Drs. Selman and Landis have provided care for patients in Northeast Ohio for over 20 years, and each rank among the leading experts in the United States in their respective fields of neurosurgery and neurology.

Patients suffering from any disorder affecting the nervous system such as stroke and cerebrovascular diseases; benign and malignant brain tumors; epilepsy; movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease; neuromuscular disorders; and cognitive disorders associated with aging such as Alzheimer’s disease are now guided through a system tailored to meet specific, individual needs. "A multi-disciplinary team of specialists has been developed to provide highly individualized therapies," says Dr. Selman. "Compassionate care is essential in dealing with diseases that affect the nervous system, and the Neurological Institute provides educational and emotional support every step of the way."

The Neurological Institute provides a patient-centered approach to care by providing and coordinating all the necessary resources for the patient, rather than requiring that the patient travel often confusing paths among various specialists. The team at the Neurological Institute is able to draw upon its extensive clinical and research experience as they devise the appropriate combinations of expertise and technology for the individualized care of children, adults and the elderly.

"The Neurological Institute will allow us to advance and make full use of all the specialties that encompass the clinical neurosciences, and provide enhanced care to the patients of Northeast Ohio who suffer from a wide range of disorders affecting the nervous system," says Fred C. Rothstein, MD, President and CEO of University Hospitals of Cleveland. "The Institute supports the mission of University Hospitals of Cleveland by using the very latest research to heal today’s patients."

Through this comprehensive approach to care, the Neurological Institute of University Hospitals of Cleveland incorporates experts from Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, the Ireland Cancer Center and MacDonald Women’s Hospital and associated facilities throughout the University Hospitals Health System to provide the most collaborative and complete patient care possible.
