University Hospitals Names Dr. Jeffrey L. Sunshine as Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer

CLEVELAND – University Hospitals (UH) has announced the appointment of Jeffrey L. Sunshine, M.D., Ph.D., as Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer.  He has been serving in those capacities on an interim basis since November 2008.

In these roles, Dr. Sunshine will be an integral member of the leadership team for the strategic planning, operations, integration and implementation of information systems and services throughout the health system, particularly in the development of UH’s $100 million Electronic Medical Record (EMR) project. While interim, he led EMR implementation across eight UH hospitals serving thousands of physicians.

The EMR is a computerized, real time, medical chart that improves patient care and safety by providing one central source of accurate health information accessible by all the doctors, nurses, and other health professionals who care for the patient.

“Dr. Sunshine has exhibited exceptional leadership skills and has nurtured excellent relationships with our medical staff that have been key in the progress we’ve made in our EMR project,” said Achilles A. Demetriou, M.D., Ph.D., President of UH. “As a clinician at University Hospitals, he has been an ardent supporter in the efforts to develop an EMR that is truly integrated within our entire health system and that will improve the quality of care we offer to patients.”

Dr. Sunshine has been involved with the UH EMR since 2004 as Medical Director and Director of Enterprise Clinician Adoption. He also will remain in positions that he currently holds at UH as Director of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and a diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologist with University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

He has been on the faculty of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1996.  He earned both his M.D. and Ph.D., in neurobiology from Case Western Reserve University.  He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in neuroradiology at University Hospitals.

He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Society for Neuroradiology and Society for Neuro-Interventional Surgery.

In addition to his clinical work, he is actively involved in medical research.  His current interests focus on high speed imaging and interventional therapy for strokes and related brain conditions.

He has been named one of the Best Doctors in America.
