Six New Board Members to Help Lead University Hospitals Health System and University Hospitals of Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- Thomas F. Zenty III, President and CEO of University Hospitals Health System (UHHS), announced today the appointments of several new members to the Boards of Directors at UHHS and University Hospitals of Cleveland (UHC). He noted the six members’ unique backgrounds reflect their business acumen and community involvement -- key traits for ensuring a healthier future for UHHS and Northeast Ohio.

New members of the UHHS Board of Directors are Kenneth Hardy, Joseph Lopez and Tom Murdough. New members of the UHC Board of Directors are Carole Carr, Stephanie McHenry and Michael Siegal. Board members serve three-year terms.

"These are dynamic and respected individuals who will undoubtedly make enormous contributions to our boards and our community due to their many talents and diverse backgrounds," Mr. Zenty said. "This is an exciting time for University Hospitals Health System as we are embarking on several exciting new endeavors, including Vision 2010, for which we will rely on their proven leadership and guidance."

Fred C. Rothstein, M.D., President and CEO of University Hospitals of Cleveland, said the appointments to the UHC Board of Directors reflect the character and diversity that has made University Hospitals of Cleveland a leader in healthcare excellence that actively fosters dedication to community.

"Their efforts on the Board along with their guidance, leadership and dedication to the community will surely enhance the foundation of University Hospitals and all we have done for the community for the past 140 years." 

Mr. Zenty also applauded the efforts of the outgoing members of the UHHS Board of Directors Samuel Ake, James Bayman, Edith Lerner and Robert Munson as well as the retiring UHC Board members Peter Adams, Ed Crawford and Jacqueline Middleton for their years of distinguished service.

"We are very grateful to them for their commitment to UHHS," Mr. Zenty said. "They and their fellow directors have contributed significantly to our mission of providing Advanced Care and Advanced Caring to the Northeast Ohio community."  

New members of the UHHS Board of Directors are:

KENNETH HARDY is President and Chief Executive Officer of Bonnie Speed Delivery, Inc., a full-service transportation company, which he acquired in 1990. As president of Bonnie Speed, Mr. Hardy has made significant changes in the areas of communications, customer service and marketing. Prior to establishing his own company, Mr. Hardy was an analyst for Caterpillar Tractor and a financial officer for Jack Daniel’s Distillery, Inc. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Alabama State University and an MBA from Florida A&M University. Mr. Hardy, a 2000 graduate of Leadership Cleveland, is also involved in numerous civic and corporate activities.

JOE LOPEZ is the founder and President of New Era Builders, Inc., a commercial General Contracting firm located in Cleveland. New Era was recognized in 2005 as #32 in Case Western Reserve University’s "Weatherhead 100," as one of the fastest growing companies in Northeast Ohio. His company’s projects include working with NASA, municipal complexes and local school facilities. New Era is also involved with a project for the United States Coast Guard and is currently designing and building an Army Training Facility in North Canton. Mr. Lopez is also a regional representative for The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, helping to represent 1.2 million Hispanic business owners throughout the country and Puerto Rico.

TOM MURDOUGH is the Chief Executive Officer and owner of The Step2 Company, a multinational manufacturer and marketer of high quality plastic products for children and for the home and garden, based in Hudson. Mr. Murdough’s Step2 companies are strategically-placed throughout the country with two in Ohio, and one each in California and Georgia. The company’s distribution capabilities stretch through the United States, Canada and over 70 foreign countries. The Step2 Company was founded in 1991 with 5 employees and now boasts over 1,000 full-time employees. Mr. Murdough has also been involved in local development, serving as the founder of Hudson Village Development Co. which assisted in a crucial redevelopment project in his hometown.

New members of the UHC Board of Directors are:

CAROLE CARR is the long-time chair of the celebrated Five Star Sensation, a biennial fundraiser, which has raised more than $8 million for the Ireland Cancer Center of UHC. She has served as chair for over 18 years. Mrs. Carr is committed to other community organizations as well, serving as a director of the Tri-C Foundation for Cuyahoga Community College, a member of the Gilmour Academy Board of Trustees, and an active volunteer and advocate for Providence House, Inc. In addition to her enormous commitments of time, talent, energy and enthusiasm, she and her husband, David D. Carr, have provided more than two decades of support to University Hospitals and last year received the hospital’s highest philanthropic honor, the Samuel Mather Award. Mrs. Carr also is a member of the National Leadership Council for Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

 STEPHANIE McHENRY is the President of ShoreBank, Cleveland Region. ShoreBank is the nation’s first and largest community development bank, with $1.5 billion in total assets. Under Ms. McHenry’s leadership and guidance, ShoreBank has invested over $100 million in Greater Cleveland neighborhoods. Prior to joining the bank, Ms. McHenry served as the Senior Director, Minority Business Development for The Greater Cleveland Growth Association, leading its successful efforts to support minority business growth. She was also Executive Director of Northern Ohio Minority Business Council. She is currently the chair of the board of the National Cooperative Bank and serves on local boards and governing bodies, including those of Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Commission on Economic Inclusion and EcoCity. Ms. McHenry has been recognized by Crain’s Cleveland Business and Kaleidoscope Magazine in their "40 under 40" features. She has been a past member of the Leadership Cleveland Class of 2003, and was recognized as the 2004 Finance Rainmaker by Northern Ohio Live. The Shaker Heights resident is a 1984 Dartmouth College graduate earning a degree in economics.

 MICHAEL SIEGAL is the Chief Executive Officer of Olympic Steel where he has also served as the Chairman of the Board since 1994. Mr. Siegal is currently a member of the Board of Directors of American National Bank in Cleveland as well as serving on Board of the Metals Service Center Institute. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Development Corporation for Israel. He has played an active role in the Israel Bonds organization since 1975 where initially he served as North American New Leadership chairman and general chairman of the Cleveland Israel Bonds campaign. In 1991, at age 38, Mr. Siegal became Israel Bonds’ youngest-ever national campaign chairman."Operation Desert Storm" began shortly after he took office and Mr. Siegal led an Israel Bonds solidarity delegation to Israel while Tel Aviv was under attack. He returned to Israel to assess the Bonds’ role in providing funding for new immigrants from the Soviet Union and Ethiopia. Also in his first year as chairman, Mr. Siegal helped establish a new Israel Bonds sales record.
