University Hospitals of Cleveland Honors Richard E. Grant, MD with Unique Endowment

"Dr. Grant is a nationally respected clinical educator and role model who specializes in orthopaedic surgery. I am confident in his ability to carry forward the legacy of Dr. Edgar Jackson as a mentor and role model for minority medical students, residents and young faculty."

Dr. Grant is a recognized national leader in the field of orthopaedic surgery, and was Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He is the first African American orthopaedic surgeon to join the full-time faculty of University Hospitals of Cleveland, and will hold an academic position at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He will begin his position in Cleveland by the end of this year.

"We are profoundly fortunate as an institution and city to have recruited Dr. Grant. He is a great physician as well as a great man," says Edgar B. Jackson, Jr., MD. "I have said to him that either the Chair was made for him, or he, himself, was born for the Chair."

Dr. Grant served as president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery from 2002-2003, and currently is the senior director of the Board. He is also a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for orthopaedic surgery and was recently appointed to the diversity committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Grant has been a visiting professor at several major medical schools throughout the country. He has authored scientific papers and book chapters, and has presented his scientific research at local, regional and national meetings.

"I am honored to be charged with fulfilling the promise reflected in Dr. Jackson’s lifelong dedication to mentoring minority medical students," says Dr. Grant. "By translating his passion and dedication, I will utilize the strength of the Chair to increase minority faculty recruitment, development and retention."

Dr. Grant earned a BS in biology at Stanford University and an MD at Howard University in 1976. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, followed by a total joint arthoplasty fellowship at Ohio State University. Dr. Grant also completed an adult spine fellowship at Baylor University/St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.

Dr. Grant has been married to Shirley Allen Grant, MD, a family medicine specialist, for 32 years. They are parents of two adult sons, Daimion and Khaleb.
