The initiative will be coordinated by Cathy Sila MD, Director of the UHCMC Neurological Institute Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center, and includes representatives from all of the fully owned and partner UH hospitals.

FDA Approves NeuRx Diaphragm Pacing System for Use in Spinal Cord-Injured Patients Thursday, June 19, 2008 (737 reads)
CLEVELAND – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the NeuRx Diaphragm Pacing System (DPS)TM for spinal cord-injured patients who are dependent on ventilators for breathing. The light-weight, battery-powered electronic DPS allows patients to breathe and speak more naturally, while eliminating the need for a power source and concern over power outages.
The system was developed over the course of 20 years through a joint research effort of physicians and engineers, primarily at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University and Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, all located in Cleveland. NeuRx DPS TM is manufactured commercially by Synapse Biomedical, Inc., based in Oberlin, Ohio.

Teen Goes to Washington to Champion Children’s Health Issues Friday, June 13, 2008 (784 reads)
CLEVELAND – Next week, 16-year-old Matt Shisler will head to Capitol Hill to champion children’s health issues. Matt, a patient at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, will participate in the National Association of Children’s Hospitals (N.A.C.H.) Family Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. Matt and his family live in Silver Lake, Ohio.
Family Advocacy Day is a special time for children and families from across the country to speak with members of Congress in support of the children’s hospitals that saved their lives. Matt and his family will be heading to Washington to meet with several legislative offices and share his Rainbow experience throughout the day on Thursday, June 19.

Groundbreaking ceremony to be held for UH Concord Health Center; University Hospitals expands services in Lake County Wednesday, June 11, 2008 (1623 reads)
CONCORD – University Hospitals (UH) officials together with Concord Trustees and Senator Tim Grendell will celebrate the groundbreaking of the future UH Concord Health Center on June 11 at 4 p.m. The 60,000-square-foot ambulatory medical center will be located on Auburn Road off Route 44 in Concord Township.
The UH Concord Health Center, which is scheduled to be completed in 2009, will offer an urgent care center, primary care services for adults and children, as well as physician specialty services, such as orthopaedics and cardiology. The Health Center will house advanced diagnostics including a laboratory, radiology, cardiac testing and a surgery center.
