University Hospitals Establishes $1.5 Million Bipolar Disorders Research Chair; Joseph R. Calabrese, MD, to be the First Chairholder

CLEVELAND – In recognition of his tireless efforts in the field of psychiatry, University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) is pleased to announce that multiple friends and supporters contributed $1.5 million to establish the Bipolar Disorders Research Chair in honor of its first incumbent, Joseph R. Calabrese, MD. Upon his retirement, the chair will be named in his honor.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Calabrese has remained a research vanguard with University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine while trailblazing treatment innovations directly responsible for improved mental health throughout the state, country and world. His exemplary work in psychiatry has set the benchmark in his field and has led to numerous academic and meritorious distinctions.

Ireland Cancer Center Researcher Lays Out Benefits of Aspirin to Prevent Colon Cancer; Dr. Sanford Markowitz’s Editorial Published in Today’s New England Journal of Medicine

CLEVELAND – Sanford Markowitz, MD, PhD, a colon cancer researcher at the Ireland Cancer Center of University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) has laid out the roadmap for how medical researchers should employ aspirin and aspirin-like drugs to prevent colon cancer in certain high-risk individuals.

In today’s New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Markowitz’s editorial accompanies research by Dr. Charles Fuchs’ team at Harvard Medical School. The Harvard researchers discovered the hypothesized mechanism by which aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), called COX-2 inhibitors, act to decrease the risk of developing colon cancer.

University Hospitals Selects Gilbane as Construction Management Company; Gilbane to Oversee Construction of all Vision 2010 Projects

CLEVELAND – University Hospitals has taken a major step forward to achieving its Vision 2010 five-year strategic plan by announcing the selection of Gilbane Building Company to oversee all Vision 2010 construction projects. These building projects, which amount to $650 million in project costs, include a new 120-bed cancer hospital on the University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) campus, the 600-bed UH Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood and renovation of UHCMC’s Center for Emergency Medicine and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

“Our Vision 2010 strategic plan represents a milestone for University Hospitals and the patients and communities we serve and we are pleased to announce that Gilbane will help us to accomplish these major construction projects,” says Thomas F. University Hospitals serves as test site for national E-Prescribing report

CLEVELAND–University Hospitals was one of five national sites chosen by the Health and Human Services Department to test initial standards for electronically prescribing drugs under Medicare.

University Hospitals Medical Practices (UHMP) and Ohio KePRO, the Quality Improvement Organization in Ohio, teamed up to study implementation of the standards in primary and specialty care physician offices. Both e-prescribing and non-e-prescribing practices participated.
