Cancer Survivors Center Funded for Children

CLEVELAND -- With support from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital will create a new Center for the Survivors of Childhood Cancer.  The Foundation, which has been developed "to enhance the quality of life for those living with, through, and beyond cancer" (www.laf.org)  is providing $100,000 to plan the development of the Center, and intends to commit $150,000 each year for three years to support the program.  The Rainbow Board of Trustees has committed matchingfunds for the same period of time.

UHC Establishes First Endowed Chair for African American Physician in Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- Under the leadership of Wayne Embry, retired General Manager/President of the Cleveland Cavaliers, local community members raised more than $1 million contributing to the creation of the first endowed chair for an African American physician in Cleveland.
The Edgar B. Jackson, Jr., MD Endowed Chair will be dedicated on April 19, 2004.

Komen Foundation Grant Funds Breast Cancer Outreach

CLEVELAND -- The Ireland Cancer Center at University Hospitals of Cleveland has received at $57,000 grant from the Northeast Ohio Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation to combat racial disparities in breast cancer. The grant will fund Project T.E.M.P.L.E., an education and outreach effort targeted at young African American women in Cleveland's inner city.

UHC Researchers Seek Better Birth Controls

CLEVELAND -- University Hospitals of Cleveland has joined a nationwide network of medical research sites to begin six years of research into female contraception designed to help develop a broader range of more effective birth control products.

James H. Liu, MD, director of Obstetrics/Gynecology, announced recently that UHC was awarded a $3.5 million contract to collaborate with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for Contraceptive Clinical Trials.

CLEVELAND -- J. Ricardo Loret de Mola, M.D., director of In-Vitro Fertilization and Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at University Hospitals MacDonald Women's Hospital, recently was elected President of the HispanoAmerican Biomedical Association (HABA).
Dr. Loret de Mola, a nationally renowned reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist, was elected in February and is serving a two-year term.
