Tips for navigating maternity leave
Getting ready to be away:
• Adjust your own mindset to the fact that you will be unavailable for many weeks.
• If your job is simple, a list of duties should be enough to help those covering for you do your work. If your job is more complex, consider creating a job handbook, listing all the tasks that need to be handed over in your absence. Include the names of those you report to and those who report to you on each project. Picture how they will do your work, and leave specific instructions in your notes. Don’t forget the little tasks that have become second nature to you. For example, if you are the only one who uses a particular online tool, you might want to leave instructions on how to access it and do the basics.
• Talk with those taking over for you. Give them a tour of your projects and workspace. If possible, introduce them to clients or important contacts. If you need to train a replacement, start early.
• Clear your desk and your computer of personal information. Update your contact list. Leave only what will help your colleagues cover for you.
• If you pass-word protect files on your computer, write down any passwords that you may not remember when you return a few months down the road.
• Leave a trail. Organize projects and track your progress so that someone else can pick up where you left off.
• Try to work ahead so that your colleagues aren’t thrown into a time crunch as they take on your job.
• Set up your e-mail and phone-mail away message with contact information for questions or problems. Be sure a colleague will respond to any issues that are sent to your attention.
