University Hospitals Announces New Organizational Structure; New Structure Ensures Health System’s Continued Success

CLEVELAND – Thomas F.  Zenty III, CEO of University Hospitals, has announced a new leadership structure that includes the addition of two key new members and two new positions for current UH leadership.

“The successful implementation of our Vision 2010 strategic plan has resulted in a multitude of accomplishments over the past several years in quality, patient satisfaction, operational improvements, financial performance, employee engagement, philanthropic attainment, and many other notable areas,” said Mr. Zenty.  “We continue to grow—at new and existing facilities and in services to meet the needs of the community. To sustain this momentum, we have designed a new leadership structure to support our strategy for the future.”

The hospital has undergone significant expansion and financial growth over the past five years and at the end of 2010 will open the new UH Ahuja Medical Center followed by the new UH Cancer Hospital in spring 2011. UH anticipates adding a net 500 additional positions in 2010, mostly new physicians.

Senior leadership will now be organized into three areas: clinical operations, system administrative services, and system staff functions.

Leading UH clinical operations is Chief Operating Officer, Achilles Demetriou, MD, PhD.  Dr. Demetriou will lead the daily operations and key leaders reporting to him will be:

  • Fred Rothstein, MD, the current President of the academic medical center, University Hospitals Case Medical Center.
  • The New President of Physician Services: Michael Nochomovitz, MD, will oversee UH Physician Services, UH’s 1,400 physicians who practice at more than 200 locations.  He will be responsible for integrating the two physician practice groups: UHMP and UHMG.

The new President of Community Hospitals and Ambulatory Networks will oversee the operations at our system-wide facilities and work to further integrate our system while building our relationships with the communities that we serve. Recruiting process underway and a final candidate will be named shortly.

  • The new System Chief Medical Officer: Eric Bieber, MD, will join us on January 1, 2010 as the System Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Bieber comes to UH from Geisinger Health System in Danville, PA.  The role for the past year was held by Michael Anderson, MD, who will transition back into his role as Associate Chief Medical Officer.
  • System Chief Nursing Officer: Cathy Koppelman, RN, will continue to lead the nursing structure system wide.

Under the new area of Administrative Services, Steve Standley will move into the position of Chief Administrative Officer. In his expanded role, Mr. Standley will work with the leaders in Marketing and Communications, Information Technology, Government Affairs, Facilities, Nutritional and Environmental Services and Real Estate.

As CEO, Mr. Zenty will lead System Staff functions and have direct leadership of the hospital’s strategic planning, financial development, legal affairs, institutional relations and development, diversity initiatives, hospital/physician compliance and human resources.

“I am confident that our new leadership structure will position us for future success and support us in our continued commitment to deliver a high quality, extraordinary patient, employee, and physician experience,” said Mr. Zenty.
