Michael A. Szubski Appointed University Hospitals Chief Financial Officer

CLEVELAND – University Hospitals has announced the appointment of Michael A. Szubski as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of University Hospitals. Following an extensive national search, Mr. Szubski, who was Chief Operating Office for University Hospitals Acute Care Hospitals, was selected for this significant position.

As CFO of University Hospitals, Mr. Szubski will oversee the hospital system’s strategic financial plan. He will also play a key role in the implementation of UH’s Vision 2010 strategic plan, a five-year, $1.2 billion investment in the future of health care in Northeast Ohio. Its construction-related projects include the UH Ahuja Medical Center, the UH Cancer Hospital, the Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, and the Center for Emergency Medicine at UH Case Medical Center. Vision 2010 also includes implementing a new state-of-the-art Electronic Medical Record.

CLEVELAND – As a result of his endless contributions to spine surgery–in clinical practice, research and teaching–Henry H. Bohlman, MD, Director, University Hospitals Spine Institute, will be honored with an endowed chair in his name, The Henry H. Bohlman, MD, Chair in Spine Surgery, at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC).

The Henry H. Bohlman, MD, Chair in Spine Surgery is a $2.2 million endowed chair that will allow UHCMC to remain at the forefront of clinical care, research and education. As a testament to the respect Dr. Bohlman has garnered, his former spine fellows and residents worldwide contributed $1.2 million to the endowment. Additionally a $1 million contribution came from The Spine Research and Education Foundation.

University Hospitals Case Medical Center receives American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Silver Performance Achievement Award

CLEVELAND – University Hospitals Case Medical Center has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines^SM–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Silver Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes University Hospitals Case Medical Center’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the GWTG–Stroke Silver Performance Achievement Award addresses the important element of time,” said Anthony J. Furlan, M.D., chairman of UH’s Department of Neurology and co-director of UH’s Neurological Institute. “Our hospital has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate. The goal is to give the right acute stroke therapy to the right patient at the right time and then to initiate an aggressive stroke prevention program” he said.

The Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust Supports Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in $2 Million Challenge to Community, Honors Children’s Heart Center

CLEVELAND – The Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust has awarded University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital a gift, with a double-impact twist. The Lennon Trust will match any individual’s contribution to Rainbow up to $1,000 until the total amount of the $2 million challenge is raised. The funds donated by the Lennon Trust will support the continued development of the highly specialized Children’s Heart Center at Rainbow.

“We wanted to give this gift in a way that inspired others to support one of our region’s greatest assets – Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital,” said Christopher P. Hitchcock, executive director of The Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust. “This challenge provides an opportunity for people to make an even greater impact in supporting the very best care for the babies and children of our community.”

Michael & Anita Siegal Elevate Pediatric Stem Cell Research at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital

CLEVELAND – Philanthropists Michael and Anita Siegal are strong supporters of stem cell research and believe in helping children. That support and belief is what inspired them to give $1 million to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to establish The Anita H. and Michael D. Siegal Chair in Pediatric Experimental Transplantation and Stem Cell Biology. (The gift is matched by an additional $500,000 from the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation.)

“Stem cell biology is the future of medicine, and children are the future of our world. This gift is meant to help cure disease and provide a more promising outlook for sick children,” said Anita Siegal. “We are blessed enough to support Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s pediatric cancer program with this gift, but our entire Northeast Ohio community is blessed to have such a phenomenal children’s hospital in our backyard. Continued support of the research and recruitment is truly at the heart of their success.”

UH Named Among 33 “Top Hospitals” Nationwide by The Leapfrog Group

CLEVELAND – University Hospitals has been recognized among 33 hospitals nationwide as a leader in quality patient care by The Leapfrog Group. University Hospitals Case Medical Center is one of 26 adult hospitals and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is one of seven pediatric hospitals to have been named “Top Hospitals” based on The Leapfrog Hospital Survey. A rating system that provides an up-to-the-minute assessment of a hospital’s quality and safety, The Leapfrog Survey included more than 1,220 facilities.
