Rainbow’s Center for Excellence in Pediatric Surgery provides comprehensive, 24-hour coverage for the emergency and elective surgical needs of children. We have an international leadership role in minimally invasive (endoscopic) neurosurgery, and a state-of-the-art translational laboratory to develop new instruments and operative approaches. Rainbow also is a premier center in the surgical treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors, epilepsy and spasticity. The cardiovascular program has among the best results in the state for open heart surgery with no mortality in newborn infants. Rainbow’s orthopaedic surgeons see more than 11,500 cases annually and have developed techniques to perform bloodless surgery and implant rods to correct scoliosis. We manage the largest craniofacial center in the region, and our plastic surgeons have developed innovative techniques for using absorbable plates and screws for reconstruction. Rainbow’s otolaryngologists perform image-guided endoscopic sinus surgeries and cochlear implant microsurgeries to restore hearing loss. Additionally, our urologic surgeons lead the field in performing laparascopic and minimally invasive procedures and bloodless renal surgeries. Rainbow’s Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center (the highest level) offers superior emergency and surgical care focused solely on children. Rainbow’s team of anesthesiologists provide 24-hour, 365-day-a-year coverage and are Diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Many also are board-certified pediatricians, or have completed advanced training in anesthesiology and/or other subspecialty areas, including critical care. To reduce any patient anxiety, Rainbow pioneered a system to allow parents to accompany their child while they are anesthetized. The Division of Anesthesia continues to publish re search on the psychological needs of children to improve their experience. | In the field of endocrinology, Rainbow provides the highest degree of research and patient care through its Centers of Excellence in Chronic Conditions of Childhood, Center for Diabetes, Center for Childhood Growth and Development and the Center for Inherited Disorders of Energy Metabolism. Rainbow’s nationally renowned experts in the fields of gastroenterology and nutrition direct the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center as a Center of Excellence. Rainbow’s exceptional nephrology department features one of only four federally supported Centers of Research Excellence in Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), and is the only Center focused on childhood P K D. More over, our Pediatric Dialysis Center is the largest in northern Ohio and the only one offering dialysis to neonates. Rainbow’s Pioneering Research in the area of primary immunodeficiency enables us to evaluate more than 100 hereditary disorders, many due to defects in genes responsible for the development of the human immune system. We also provide curative treatment to prevent long term damage due to recurrent infections. Additionally, our experts in the Rheumatology Division provide uninterrupted care to maturing adolescents with autoimmune diseases. Our Division of Neurology operates Centers of Excellence that are enhancing the treatment of epilepsy and seizure disorders, fetal and neonatal neurological disorders, sleep disorders, autism and cerebral palsy.
