Aviv Ben-Meir is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric and metabolic surgery. In addition, Dr. Ben-Meir’s clinical interests include surgical treatment of hiatal, paraesophageal and abdominal wall hernias, as well as gallbladder and esophageal issues. An early proponent of bariatric patient education and postoperative support, Dr. Ben-Meir focuses on providing the highest quality care to all his patients. He currently serves as Chief of Surgery at UH Lake Health.

After earning his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1991, Dr. Ben-Meir obtained his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1996. Following completion of his University Hospitals of Cleveland integrated surgery residency in 2001, he finished a fellowship in bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of Virginia Health System in 2002.

In June 2002, Dr. Ben-Meir returned to Cleveland, where he joined three other bariatric surgeons to introduce laparoscopic bariatric surgery at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. In 2004, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery designated the resulting program as a Center of Excellence, making it one of the first such programs to earn this designation.

Dr. Ben-Meir has practiced laparoscopic bariatric surgery continuously in northeastern Ohio since 2002, longer than any other surgeon in the area. During this time, he has performed approximately 6,000 weight loss operations. Dr. Ben-Meir has been affiliated with Lake Health since 2013 and University Hospitals since 2021. Since 2016, his program has been fully accredited as a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Quality Improvement Program by the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Ben-Meir has presented on various bariatric surgery-related topics at numerous national medical conferences and meetings, including those held or hosted by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, American Society for Bariatric Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Richland County Medical Society, Mercy Medical Center, Medina County Medical Society and Firelands Hospital CME. He has published research in a number of peer-reviewed journals, among them Obesity Surgery, American Journal of Surgery, Peptide Research and Amyloid.

Professional societies and committees in which Dr. Ben-Meir has served as a member include the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and American College of Surgeons, Lake Health Operative Services, Lake Health Department of Surgery Quality Committee, Lake Health Robotic Surgery Committee, and Saint Vincent Charity Medical Center Medical Executive Committee.
