When an area of a blood vessel gets weak, it can start to swell like a balloon and become abnormally large. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the enlargement of the aorta, the main blood vessel that delivers blood to the body, at the level of the abdomen. This type of aneurysm tends to grow slowly, often times without symptoms. But as it enlarges, some people may have a pulsating feeling around their navel. If a AAA grows too large, the aorta can tear or burst, which can be life threatening.
